Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: A little Jazz..A little Photography...a little talk about taking candid photos!

So as the daughter of a jazz musician, I occasionally get to have fun taking photos of my mother and her fellow musicians out at their gigs.  I thought it might be fun to use some of their pictures to talk about how to take better candid shots.  So obviously when you are photographing a band, or a group of kids on stage (the list goes on...)  You can't change what they are doing and you can't change the limited number of angles that you have.  I have a couple tips on doing the best you can with a difficult shooting situation.

The first tip, when I go on any photo shoot, I set my camera settings ahead of time.  The benefit to this is that I am relatively confident that I am not going to miss any of the action.  If you are in the same room for the whole time (barring being closer and farther from changing light sources like windows) you can usually make sure you are happy ahead of time and just focus on composition.

The second tip is don't be afraid to move around the room.  Get as close as you can without disturbing others around you.  Not a lot of good pictures are had by just sitting in your seat and watching the show.

Change your perspective if you can.  Stand on a chair. Lay on the ground. If you are taking pictures of a dance group, try taking pictures of just their cute little feet all in a row.  Don't be scared to play around.

Make one subject your focal point, take a picture of the singer and blur the band.  Take a picture of the guitarist when he or she is playing their solo.  Try to catch each person in their element.

Happy Shooting!

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Small Business Highlight of the week: Tiny Boxes Boutique

One of my favorite places to frequent in Downtown Plymouth is Tiny Boxes Boutique.  Their jewelry and accessories are so stylish and fun.  You can always find something unique in any price range.  Also, Karen and her staff are super helpful and great to talk to. Many times I go in with no idea of what I want to get for someone.  I ask for suggestions, give a price point and I leave with something that my friends and family think is fabulous.  If you haven't been in here you need to drop everything and go shop immediately.

Since we are nearing mother's day rapidly and I know there is a lot of shopping left to do, it is a really timely suggestion!

Selection  includes silver jewelry, semi precious stones, fresh-water pearls, shells, beautiful real butterfly wing jewelry, recycled water and wine bottle pieces, hand blown crushed recycled glass, handmade fair trade items, crystals, mood beads, drusy jewelry,... Everything you could want.

Tiny Boxes is located at 31 Main St, Plymouth, Massachusetts 02360. Find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tiny-Boxes-Boutique/101048299939784 or on the web at http://www.tinyboxesboutique.com.

So it has been a whirlwind of a weekend to say the least!  I was super excited to be working with Alden Park Bar and Grill at their Kentucky Derby Fundraiser to benefit the Rich Cronin Hope Foundation for Leukemia.  If you missed it this year be sure to keep a look out for it next year because it was the event of the season.  They nailed it!  Everyone had so much fun and came together to raise money for a great cause!  Looking forward to next year already.  Here is a peek at the some of the photos that will be up in our gallery for people to order.  A portion of the print proceeds will also be donated to the Rich Cronin Hope Foundation for Leukemia so don't miss out! Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Throwback Thursday: My grandmother

So this week is a week for tributes I guess.  I am making this throwback Thursday post about my grandmother.  She was really the linchpin that held together the family.  She was one of the most giving and most outspoken women that I knew.  She passed in 2012 and is still greatly missed.  Even at 93 we would talk every day and she was sharp as a tack.  I used to call her in the middle of the night and on my way home from work just when I wanted someone to talk to.  She was a seamstress by trade, she took care of her family with love and grace and lots of Italian cooking.  This was her photo on her wedding day.  I restored the image and I am posting the before and after of the restoration.  I miss her everyday and I love her with all my heart! Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Small Business Highlight: Archiplicity, Inc.

So last week I chronicled on of the entrepreneurs in my family and this week I am going to talk about the other; my sister.  My sister (unlike me) knew what she wanted to do since she was in high school.  She spent long hours and gave up countless opportunities to socialize to build herself a thriving business in the field of architecture.  She founded her own company Archiplicity, Inc. in 2001 and has never looked back.  To her, exceeding her clients expectations is what she strives for.  She has a meticulous eye for detail and a impeccable taste when it comes to design.  In her own words, "Our philosophy is to create architecture that is simple and elegant. We believe design should be based on good proportion, simple, well placed details and a thoughtful response to existing surroundings."  I am inspired and encouraged by her efforts and how far it has taken her.  For more information on her business go to archiplicity.com, email her at info@archiplicity.com or call 508-789-7184. I have had the benefit of photographing a few of her projects.  Here is just one of them: House1

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Photo Tip of the Day: Most Flattering Portrait Angle

So I would say that pretty much all of us, me included, have something that they don't love about their appearance.  As a photographer, you are trying to not only take a technically good photo, but also capture people in their best light so that the results show the best of who they really are.  This doesn't mean that your photographer needs to know how to make you loose 25 pounds in photoshop or how to erase age lines to make you look 10 years younger.  You just need to know something about light and positioning.  The best angle I have found for almost every body type is to sit your subject sideways looking at you slightly over their shoulder with you taking the photo at eye level or slightly about.  Also when it comes to lighting avoid harsh sunlight or shadows.  Stand you subjects in the shade or wait for a partly cloudy day.  If you can't avoid the shadows, use your flash outside and in bright sunlight.  The flash will help to fill in the shadows that are cast at weird angles so that people are more evenly lit. Here is an example: headshot

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Shout out to another great Local Business!

Many of you may have no idea but I come from a family of entrepreneurs.  My mom and my sister both own their own businesses as well.  I think that definitely deserves a shout out to local women making big things happen.  One of the best ways to keep you town thriving is to support local business. Today I am giving credit to my mom who has taught me to not be afraid to pursue you dreams and to do what you love and the money will follow.  Much like my career in photography, my mother started her music business later in life.  She went back to school when she was 35 and opened her music school with her long time friend and colleague Paul Kinnear at 42.  Today they have a thriving school with lots to offer.  Music Lessons, Instruments and and other related musical goods, Ensembles, and More.

Middle Street School of Music has been open now for over 20 years and is, I would say, the main location for musical lessons in Plymouth and the surrounding towns.  For further information about lessons and more go to http://middlestreetmusic.com Middle Street at 508-830-1766 or middlest@verizon.net

In their own words:

The study of music has long been used to help instill confidence and build self-esteem was well as bringing great pleasure to both the listener as well as to the performer. It is upon this ideal that Middle Street School of Music was established in 1992.

At Middle Street School of Music our goal is to teach. We take pride in the knowledge that our staff represents some of the most respected music professionals. All of our music teachers have spent years of intense study, perfecting skills in their chosen field. They are prepared to take on the unique challenges presented with teaching both beginners and professional musicians.

Great Job to my mom and Paul for creating something wonderful!

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Happy Easter!

I know it is a little late, but here we go with one of my favorite photos from Easter!  We went to the Easter Egg Hunt at Emeritus Senior Living.  There were tons of kids there.  They did a great job though and the kids all made sure they left some eggs for the little ones.  Lucy had a blast.  They had decorate your own cupcakes.  The residents were so sweet and nice, I think they had a blast too.  I hope you enjoy Lucy in her Easter Dress as much as I do!

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF PLYMOUTH: Construction underway on new teen center

It is so nice to see things going on in Plymouth for local teens in our community.  It seems like there is never enough for kids to do that is fun in the area that won't get them into trouble.  I am excited to hear more about the teen center and see it when it is finished. http://plymouth.wickedlocal.com/article/20140418/NEWS/140417637

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Ducks, Ducks, Everywhere!

Since it is Friday and the work week is winding down, I thought why not step back from work and have some fun!  A little known fact among my clients, I collect rubber ducks.  I have all different types of ducks.  This started with my best friend Paul, who unfortunately passed a few years ago.  We collected all different types of ducks together.  Paul even gave me heart ducks for valentine's day.  Before I met and married Dave, Paul was my date for everything.  In fact I told Dave that Paul was my date on Valentine's day and we would have to pick another day because that was our tradition.  Dave and I even had ducks as the favors at our wedding!  Of course, we also had a balloon artist at our wedding too!  I am going to post about him another day, but he did the most fantastic balloon animals!  Can you tell that I like to have fun!  Now the ducks mostly swim in the bath with Lucy.  My thought was, what a great collection to have!  They are fun, inexpensive, and easily transportable things to bring back from your travels and remember special people that touch your life (and give you ducks!) Just a little something to make us all smile and remember something special all at the same time! Ducks

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Boys and Girls Club of Plymouth!

Today was the groundbreaking ceremony for the Boys and Girls Club of Plymouth.  Very exciting new stuff going on over there.  I met the board members and the Executive Director Garreth Lynch, as well as the Executive Director for the Massachusetts Alliance Michael Goodwin.  What a great group of people!  Here are just a couple photos of the groundbreaking.  I will have photos of the building to follow!  And by the way, what a beautiful day to be out taking pictures!

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Talk about April Showers!

It is such a dreary dismal day today.  The kind where you just want to stay in your PJ's and inside the house!  Lucky for me I can choose to do that if I want!  That is a work at home benefit for sure.  It is also one that I almost never take advantage of!  I don't know why not! Even my flowers are hibernating today! But without the rain there would be no rainbows and no flowers!  Enjoy this day with some comfort food and some warm snuggly clothes if you can!  We are having pot roast for dinner made in the slow cooker.  This is the easiest recipe ever if you want to join in on that! Be sure to add some potatoes too though!

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: A home for misfit toys

Okay, so not photography related at all, but a fun way to start off a Monday! We are not only an in-home photo studio but also a home for wayward wanders.  Because we have the convenience of being located downtown, I often go out for a walk during my down time or just to take a break.  We often find little lost friends (that's what we like to call them) along the way.  This little lost friend was found outside my house yesterday! So I bring them in, clean them up and give them a new home.  They sometimes stay here.  They sometimes head to the play area at Middle Street School of Music and then they also could end up with the toys at our Jordan Hospital drop in group.  No one is ever left behind though.  See now isn't that a fun story to make you smile on Monday!

Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: A day of rest and fun

Oh my! The nice weather is certainly here full force this weekend and not a moment too soon! Time to get out and start checking off one of my goals: personal creative projects. I am making it a goal this year to not only work on my business but to also balance with it the creative ideas that I have mulling around in head! These have nothing to do with making money. They only have to do with having fun! I sometimes get so wrapped up in my work (not a bad thing!), I forget about all the other fun projects I want to do. So this year, I added it to my business plan so I am making myself accountable for those things too! Here are some fun creative photos taken around town today! today was a day purely dedicated to playing.  Here are some pictures of my loves at the playground! Happy Sunday everyone! Plymouth South Shore Professional Photographer: Just having some fun at The Mirrored Image Photography!

It seems like lately it is so easy to focus on Photography as a business.  I love what I do and I have so many great projects and people that I work with. Before this was a business though, it was a passion and I had ideas of creative projects to do solely because they were art and not because they were jobs.
One of my goals for this year is to work on some creative projects with different people just for fun.  This will not only help me to find balance with through art projects but also help to boost creativity in everything that I do!  I am so excited to be moving forward with my first project.  Tonight I am meeting with a hairstylist and makeup artist to talk about doing portraits, but not just any portraits, full face makeup creative and fun portraits!  I will let you all know tomorrow how it goes, but I have seen some of her work and I am super excited to see where this goes!
